When wood floors are an option, many homeowners think that by installing it yourself, you’re saving a bunch of money -- but sometimes it isn’t as easy as watching a video, and hammering boards into the floor. Before tackling the project yourself, there are a few things you should ask yourself, before committing to a job that may be too complicated for you to complete on your own.

Checking the subfloor is just as important as anything else. Not only should it be checked for squeaks, but it needs to be the correct thickness in order to hold the flooring correctly.
Proper Nailing. In order to prevent your floors from creaking, this is a critical part of the installation process. These nails have to be driven into the boards in a precise manner to prevent them from lifting or shifting. Failure to do this correctly can result in creaking floorboards, and stubbed toes!
Proper gluing. Some wood planks call for glue, which seems easy, but can also be very tricky. This application needs to be seamless and include a perfect bead of glue in order to have the planks not only stick, but set correctly. Failure to pay attention can cause excess glue which can stick to the top of the wood plank, damaging the look.
