Flooring is arguably one of the biggest parts of your home, and plays a huge role in the way you construct both styles, and room separation. So when it comes to decorating a room from scratch, one of the first things to think about should be how the flooring can tie it all together. In more than one way, your floor can make the room inviting, or suit another desired style. It’s important to think about a number of variables that can potentially affect the final outcome of your interior decor.
Think About Your Furniture When Designing. Your flooring is going to be underneath it, and from a color blocking perspective, needs to be complementing it. If your floor is going to be extremely dark, you have a few options; make your furniture match, or contrast the color with something lighter. Be careful though, and stay in a similar family of colors -- too many, and your room’s atmosphere might get a little thrown off.
Plan Walls & Windows Accordingly. Again with color blocking, it’s important to have your walls set the mood for not only lighting, but the overall ‘theme’ of the room itself. You can do as much as you’d like in terms of decorating, but an incorrectly colored wall won’t help tie anything together. Consider this before making a choice. Windows also play a role in it as well, due to their positioning. For darker rooms, make sure your windows aren’t letting too much light in, and if so, they’re properly covered when the sun hits them.
Choose The Right Flooring. Depending on your household and the room you’re designing, the type of floor is very important. While traditional wood flooring has been popular for years, other options are just as efficient, and can serve better purposes. Engineered wood can be a great choice for budget projects, and laminate flooring can help give a nice modern look to a kitchen, without the worry of water stains.
If wood flooring is something you’re thinking about going with, make sure you make a conscious decision before purchasing. This often includes visiting a showroom prior to committing to a color -- which is totally fine!
