Step 1 - Prepare the area you are going to finish. It's important to remove all furniture, window treatments and wall hangings before starting.

Step 2 - Prep room for floor finishing. Cover light fixtures with plastic bags and secure with masking tape. Remove trim and molding with pry bar. To prevent damage, insert a small piece of wood behind the pry bar to provide leverage. Seal all openings, including electrical outlets, light switches and vents with masking tape. Close off the construction area from the rest of the house by taping the door shut or hanging a plastic sheet in the doorway. Vacuum the floor thoroughly to remove dust and debris.

Step 3 - Start by sanding the floor with an electric drum sander. If you do not have an electric drum sander, they are available to rent at most equipment rental facilities. If this is your first time using the machine, we recommend practicing in an area that won't be visible after the furniture is replaced. Start with 20 - 60 grit sandpaper.

Step 4 - Begin sanding from the middle of the floor and work outward to the room edges. We recommend moving with the grain of the wood. If you couldn't reach some areas with the electric sander, finish the room edges with a hand sander.

Step 5 - Clean floor thoroughly before next round of sanding.

Step 6 - Repeat Steps 3, 4 and 5.

Step 7 - Apply a floor sealer to hardwood prior to staining it. This will prevent any uneven coverage areas.

Step 8 - Stain the floor. Similar to the sanding steps, if this is your first time staining a hardwood floor, we recommend practicing in an area that won't be visible. Using a bucket of wood stainer, start staining the floor with a brush, rag or roller. After letting the stain dry for 10-20 minutes, wipe away any excess stain.

Step 9 - Add any additional coats you feel are necessary to achieve your desired results.
