  1. Layout - Instal your floorboards lengthwise across the room and perpendicular to your joist. Installing it this way is a good idea not only for aesthetic reasons but also because it will prevent warping and will stay together longer.
  2.  Leveling - Make sure your subfloor is level; you don’t want squeaky floors! Sand your floors and top it with a rubber underlayment.
  3. Subfloors - If you plan on nailing down your floor, a subfloor is a must. Be cautious when you’re buying the subfloors because the plywood needs to be thick enough for you to nail it down.
  4. Floating Floors - If you don’t want to deal with glue or nails, floating floors are the way to go! They can easily be placed above the your old floors but if you don’t want your old floors haunting you, give us a call to remove them!
  5. Adhesive - Follow directions when it comes to Adhesive’s. Check the gluing time and work in small sections so you don’t waste adhesive.
  6. Engineered Wood - Use this type of wood in damp areas, like your basement, because it consists of a top layer of real wood attached to multiple, thin layers of plywood/fiberboard. Engineered wood could be refinished once or twice.
  7. Staining - You never really know what your wood is going to look like after it’s stained so make sure you test it out on a sample piece of wood or in an area that isn’t going to be seen. You don’t want to stain your entire floor and be unhappy with the outcome!
  8. Protection - There is a difference between a stain and a protective finish. Stain adds color or tone to the wood and protective coating is a great option because it will guarantee a longer life to your floors.
