Nothing quite compares to the character and warmth of hardwood floor in the house. If you are considering updating current hardwood floors or installing brand new floors, here are some things to keep in mind.
Types of Wood Flooring
There are primarily two types of wood flooring products, solid hardwood and engineered hardwood. Engineered wood flooring is comprised of multiple layers of plywood and composite material, with the top layer being solid hardwood. Solid hardwood flooring is milled from solid wood logs, and is joined with a traditional tongue and grooves along the edges of each wood plank. While both types of hardwood flooring are comfortable, durable and surprisingly affordable, the primary difference between them is their composition. Solid wood flooring is subject to expanding and contracting depending on a home's humidity. It's best if solid wood flooring is installed on the ground floor or above. Engineered flooring is more stable due to its multi-ply construction, and can be installed all level of the home.
Choice of Wood Species
Some types of wood are harder and more durable than others. Read and White Oak are the most common types of wood used for domestic flooring. Other popular choices are Hickory and Maple, which are harder than Oak, and Walnut, which is softer than Oak. Other top choices include exotic woods such as Brazilian Chery, Brazilian Koa and Cumaru.
Grain, Color and Appearance
Because hardwood flooring comes in so many different species and styles, it's exceptionally easy to match any room decor. If you have a country-style home, wide plank floors with defined wood grains will be a great fit. For colonial homes, consider wide, random plank flooring filled with Oak and Maple. For traditional-style interior homes, hardwood flooring in widths of 2-1/4" to 3-1/4" in Oak, Maple or Walnut will be notable.
Type of Finish
The finish of your hardwood flooring will determine the final overall appearance of the wood floor. The same exact hardwood floor will look very different in a clear gloss, than hard-scraped or wire-brushed finish.
