When Are Hardwood Floors Worth Saving?

Is it time to replace my old wood floors, or can I salvage them by fixing the squeaks and replacing damaged boards? Older hardwood floors often show signs of wear and tear including stains, chips or cracks that come with age. So how do you decide if your floor needs to be replaced or if the cosmetic damages can be salvaged? See below to find out:

The key issue at hand comes down to preference. If your wood floors are driving you crazy and there’s no way that a simple repair will make you happy, it’s probably time to replace them. However, if you’d like to take the less expensive route you can have your floors repaired to get them back into pristine shape.

According to HGTV, “almost all old floors can be salvaged and refinished by skilled contractors.” Stains can be sanded and removed,  holes can be plugged, and damaged or broken floorboards can be replaced. (See our blog: How To Fix A Broken Floorboard for more information.) Keep in mind that wood floors can be sanded up to 6 or 7 times throughout their lifetime without compromising their functionality.

There are cases when old floors are beyond repair. Extreme movement between boards, substantial structural problems or floors that have been sanded too many times are symptoms that may indicate that your floors need to be replaced.
