Why Is My Wood Floor Separating?

Find the perfect solution to gaps in your wood floors! Just about every wood floor, no matter the type or size, will show some separation between boards especially in the colder winter months. Small gaps are common, but we understand how annoying they can be so see below to find out how to make them less noticeable.

So what’s the trick? Rope. Yes, you heard us right, rope. You’ll only need a few items including a putty knife, hemp rope and some newspapers for this project. Run the putty knife in between the cracks to loosen any dirt and debris that may have gotten stuck in there. Then vacuum the floor before measuring the space between the boards.

Cut strips of the hemp rope a hair wider than the width of the gaps and submerge the strips in a bucket of stain - make sure the stain matches the color of your wood floor. Once the strips dry, lay them in the gaps and press them down with the putty knife. That’s all there is to it!

Another quick tip to lessen the space between floorboards is to use a humidifier. When your home’s heating system kicks on and the air is dry, the boards can shrink and gaps may widen.
