What’s a wood floor’s worst nightmare? If you said spills, pets or UV rays you’d be correct. Some things are unavoidable, but there are a number of maintenance and essential care tips that can help protect your hardwood floors.
It’s important to vacuum or sweep your floors regularly. Make sure you’re using a soft-bristled attachment or broom so the floor doesn’t scratch and don’t use a vacuum with a beater bar or power rotary brush head.
In addition to keeping your floors clean, keeping your windows covered to block fade-causing UV rays is essential. Most wood floors will fade with age so it’s wise to move rugs and furniture around periodically to help it age evenly.
What else can you do to protect your floors?
Keep your pets’ nails trimmed and wipe their paws if they go outside.
Use a humidifier in the winter to help prevent wood shrinkage and a dehumidifier during the warmer months to prevent them from expanding.
Wipe up spills immediately, this includes both liquids and solids. You can use ice cubes to harden tough substances like gum or wax and then scrape it gently with a plastic scraper or credit card.
You made a large investment in nice wood floors so why not take care of them? A little bit of maintenance goes a long way!
