Although your hardwood floors are a few years old, it is possible to keep them looking “like new”. If your floors have taken a beating over the years you may be thinking this is impossible, but with a few cleaning and protective maintenance tips, you’ll have them shining in no time!
Cleaning Tips
If you go weeks without cleaning your floors, this is problem number one. You should sweep, dust mop or vacuum them regularly using the appropriate settings and attachments.
If you use a mop to clean the floors, be sure to squeeze all of the water out before placing it on the surface. Water is a wood floor’s worst enemy and can cause it to warp or get damaged.
Never use cleaning products with ammonia. This dangerous chemical can be very detrimental to hardwood.
Protection Tips
If you happen to spill something on the floor, don’t let it sit. Wipe it up immediately with a soft cloth or towel.
Don’t allow anyone to walk on the floor with spike heels, heel taps or cleats. Have them remove their shoes at the door to avoid scratching or dragging in sharp objects.
Keep animal nails trimmed.
Use floor protectors on furniture legs on chairs and couches.
