How To Choose The Right Finish

Are your wood floors scratched, faded or worn out? If so, it may be time to refinish them. While the type of finish has an impact on the floor will look and how durable it will be, not all finishes should be treated the same. Find out which type of finish is right for your floors below:

When shopping for a wood floor finish, it’s vital to keep in mind that the wrong finish could potentially ruin your floors. The two main categories include water-based and oil-based and it all depends on what type of flooring you have in your home.

Water-based finishes are fast-drying and need to be applied with care and caution to avoid brush marks. If you have exotic woods and prefer to see the natural color of the wood come through, water-based finishes are the way to go.

Looking for more color and depth? Then go with an oil-based polyurethane. This type of finish will give you an ambering, yellow effect on light woods and will make stained and dark woods even darker. Oil-based finishes do take longer to dry, about 12-24 hours, and they work well on species such as walnut and red birch.
