How To Choose The Right Flooring

The days of limiting hardwood floors to the kitchen or living room are over. The industry has made great advances in the last few years that have made putting hardwood floors in any room of the home a possibility. But first, you should understand the types of flooring and how well each type is able to handle traffic.

Unfinished
With unfinished flooring, you purchase the wood as is and your installer will sand it and apply the finish once it has been installed. Why is unfinished flooring a good choice? It’s great if you’re looking for a specific color or need to match it with flooring that has been previously installed in your home.

Finished
This type of flooring is finished in the factory. It requires less time for installation and is ready to walk on as soon as it’s laid.

Solid Wood Vs. Engineered Wood
Solid wood is literally a solid piece of wood from top to bottom that can range in thickness from ¾” to 5/16” and it can be sanded and refinished a number of times. This is a great choice for areas with lots of traffic like the kitchen and the living room because if the surface gets worn or damaged, the floor won’t be ruined.

Engineered wood is constructed using a number of layers of wood veneers with top layer consisting of high-quality wood. It can be sanded and refinished but not as many times as solid wood. This option is great for areas with higher humidity and greater changes in temperature because it expands and contracts less than solid wood.
