Installing Engineered Wood Floors

Looking for a quick, easy way to get a new wood floor in your home? While solid wood is a great choice that can last a century, engineered wood is the perfect solution. But there are some things you should know about the installation process - see below to find out more:

Getting The Subfloor Ready
It’s vital to make sure the subfloor is prepared before installing any type of wood floor. Walk over every inch listening for squeaks and keeping an eye out for nail heads, screws, or anything else sticking up out of it. You can use an object with a straightedge for assistance.

Prepare The Rest Of The Room
Trim the bottom of each door casing so the new floor can slip underneath. Then be sure to vacuum the whole floor to get rid of any dirt or debris.

Starting Out
Start in a corner of the room by placing ½” spacers against the wall. This will help combat buckling when the temperature and humidity changes inside the room. Then facenail the boards against the wall every 8 inches apart. Once the first course is in place, toenail the strip’s tongue at a 45-degree angle into the subfloor.

Make Sure Everything Is Aligned
As you continue to lay the boards, tap the strips together using a block and a hammer - this will keep them snug.  You’ll want to stagger, or rack, the end joints randomly across the floor as you lay out the next courses.
