There’s nothing worse than seeing a scratch or a ding on your new wood floors. But you don’t have to panic - common wood floor foes can usually be fixed fairly simply. You just need the right tools and a few tips and you’ll have your floors looking like new in no time.
Steam Out Dents
Did you know that high heels exert lots of pressure on a wood floor? Sometimes a heel can even leave a deep impression in the wood, but you can steam it out. Just fold up a towel and place it over the mark. Then use a hot steam iron on top of the towel for about a minute. The steam should cause the wood to swell and return to normal. It’s a good idea to try this on a hidden part of the floor first because steam has the ability to turn a floor’s finish white.
Furry Friend Scratches
If you haven’t had your pets’ nails trimmed in a while there’s a good chance they might scratch your wood floors. You can solve this problem by rubbing a small amount of tinted paste wax into the area with a clean rag.
Deep Gouges
You may feel like the world is going to end if you wind up with a deep gouge in your floor. Try using fine-grit sandpaper and work with the grain to sand out the scratch. Then use a putty knife to fill in the gap with wood filler and sand away the excess. Lastly, use a stain to match the color of the floor.
