3 Fast Flooring Fixes

A scratch here. A squeak there. Hardwood flooring can transform just about any room of your home into an elegant oasis, but it can quickly become an eye - or ear- sore as it ages. Even though hardwood is a preferred option for high-traffic areas of the home, it’s bound to gather some nicks, dings and stains. But you don’t have to tear your hair out every time you notice a small imperfection - read below for three fast fixes.

Quiet The Squeaks: we all know how unpleasant the sound of a squeaky wood floor can be. To this the problem once and for all, drill a 1/16-inch pilot hole in the floorboard at an angle. When you hit the subfloor stop drilling and hammer a 6d finish nail into the hole. Recess the head using a nailset and then fill it with wood putty.

Suppress Scratches: even the hardest wood flooring options can endure scratches over time. It’s best practice to touch up scratches as soon as you notice them. To do so, use a stain-filled marker that matches the color of your floor.

Fill The Gaps: notice large gaps in between the boards? It’s especially common this time of year when the weather is cold and there is less moisture in the air. You can use a small piece of rope to fill the gaps, just be sure to stain it the same color as the floor.
