Which Stain Applicator Is Right For You?

You finally picked the color you like to stain your hardwood floors. Now it’s time to choose the right tool to apply it with. With all of the options out there - from rollers to T-bars, lambswool, brushes and rags - this may seem like another nearly impossible decision. But, there’s a simple way to break it all down.

If you chose to go with an oil-based polyurethane, your best bet is to use a China bristle brush or a lambswool applicator. The bristle brush is made from hog’s hair which sucks up the finish and releases it onto the floor with each stroke. A lambswool applicator holds a lot of finish at a time, just like the China bristle brush but it’s a little bit cheaper. The major difference however, is that you are standing up while using the lambswool applicator so you’re further from the floor whereas with the bristle brush you’ll up close and personal.

While you want lots of finish on the applicator when using an oil-based product, the opposite is true for water-based finishes. Therefore, bristle brushes and lambswool are not your best option. A synthetic pad on a block, a T-bar with a synthetic sleeve or a roller will do the trick.
