Easy Fixes For Squeaky Floors

Over time, there are a number of things that can lead to squeaky floors. Sometimes, the conditions that cause these pesky noises cannot be completely controlled; however, there are a number of things that can alleviate it. Before ripping up your floor, take a look at some of these tips and see if one works for you!

Special Screws

If you’re aware of where the foundation of your floor is located, there are screws that can be inserted into the wood to attach it to the foundation or beams underneath. The best feature about these screws is their ‘snap-off heads,’ which gives you the assurance that you won’t have to look down at the head of a screw everyday. For the ⅛-inch sized holes that the screws leave, you can apply a wax filler stick in the corresponding color-- good as new!

Shims

If you have access to the floor below, you may be in luck! Ask a friend to walk around upstairs on the floor until you hear the squeak. When you find the area, grab a wood shim and insert it between the joist and the floor-- this will prevent the floor from bouncing as someone walks over it, which typically creates the noise!

Add Blocks Between Joists

If the flooring itself isn’t the culprit, consider that it may be your joists aging poorly. Grab some 2-by-8-foot blocks of wood, and nail them at the midpoint between the joists. This in turn will limit overall flex and movement, which can remedy all that creaking! It’s also a good idea to add an adhesive along the edges before permanently fastening them in place.
