The thought of our new hardwood floors becoming tarnished is probably a nightmare we’ve all had-- but the reality is that nothing stays perfect forever, and sometimes these investments require a little TLC in order to look great for years to come. Here are a few ways you can effectively remove everyday stains.
For white stains, caused usually by moisture, it’s best to sometimes give them a day or two to let them dry. Sometimes this helps; however, if not, you can place a cotton cloth over the stain and rub it with a hot iron.
If your stain is black, this may be somewhat problematic-- one of the few options you have is to apply a small amount of bleach to the stain with a brush, and allow to sit for several hours. A second application should then be applied, and a drying period of about a day should be allocated.
Food and nail polish are a bit easier -- phew! If one of these pesky items penetrate the wood, you can use simple dish detergent and warm water on a cotton cloth. For greasier stains, try mixing a bit of ammonia and cold water together. You can apply with a cotton cloth as well.
For other stains that can be between the light and dark side, try hydrogen peroxide! Your wood floors can handle a light bleaching in attempts to remove the stain. Soak a rag with peroxide and place it over the stain, allowing it to absorb into the wood. Remove the rag, wipe excess peroxide from the floor, and allow to dry for a day before reassessing the situation.
