Solid Hardwood v Engineered Hardwood

Choosing the right floor for your home can sometimes be a daunting task. When hardwood flooring becomes an option, there are two primary choices as to which is best for you and your living space. Whether it is a DIY project, or you’re calling the professionals, there are many options to consider before making a final decision. Here are some things to think about:

What Fits Your Style?

Perhaps one of the more important choices in relation to your new floor is the option between a solid piece of wood versus an engineered piece. During this process, it’s important to weigh your options before making any sort of decision. If you’re the creative type who likes change, solid hardwood may be a better option. It provides the opportunity to be sanded and refinished more than once, whereas engineered hardwood does not.

Where Does It Belong?

These factors also apply to what type of room the wood is going in. As engineered hardwood contains less actual wood, it’s more resistant to moisture and is recommended for use in bathrooms and other high-moisture areas. Solid wood is primarily used for bedrooms, living rooms, but is not recommended for use in a basement.

Overall Durability and Longevity

While both options are great for different applications, it’s also critical to ask yourself how long you want your hardwood floors to last. Solid wood will have a longer lifespan than a piece of engineered wood, which may not hold up as long as the others. Engineered wood will allow more versatile installation in rooms of the house where solid is not recommended, but will not hold the same value
