Basic Floor Cleaning Tips

So you’ve got your new floors installed - great! But what happens when it’s time to clean? If you haven’t done your homework yet, fear not -- it’s actually much easier than you think. Typically, most floor cleaning products can be found in-house! Take a look at these basic cleaning tips below.

  1. Dry mops are your friend. With wood flooring, it’s never recommended that you allow any type of liquid to absorb into your flooring. This causes warping, which not only looks bad, but can cause splinters and stubbed toes. A dry mop can do wonders for your floor, picking up all particles that would otherwise be stuck on the ground.
  2. For high traffic areas, water is ok -- sorta. It’s critical to note that before mopping, you’ll need to thoroughly wring out your mop. Mix ¼ cup of mild soap in a bucket of water. Dip the mop out and remove as much moisture as you can. Mop the floor and immediately use a dry microfiber towel to wipe off any moisture. This is a great type of maintenance to do once every week or so.
  3. If your floor has a wax coating, you’re in better shape than most. Instead of using any sort of moisture based mop to clean, it’s a good choice to use only a vacuum, or dry mop such as a Swiffer. This prevents moisture from tainting the wax coating -- think of it like a car!
  4. Bamboo is a much more delicate type of wood -- for that reason, it requires meticulous care. If you’re seeing scuffs and scratches, take a tennis ball and gently try buffing out the imperfection -- you’d be surprised at how great the results are!
