Selecting The Right Flooring Finish

Selecting the right finish on your floor can be one of the hardest things to do. You've spent countless hours redoing it to look great, but can't quite decide on the final look you're setting out to achieve. While it ultimately comes down to taste, the contents of your room should also play a role in the deciding process. Here are a few different things to choose from


Sheens

One of the most important things on your floor is the sheen. These options range from matte to high gloss, and present many different ways to decorate a room. For example: someone who enjoys a ton of light will opt for a high gloss, as the light will bounce off of the finish, while those who enjoy darker rooms may opt for a matte finish, which will also bring out more of a flat look, and allow less light to reflect.

Finishes

Here's where it gets tricky. Based on the amount of odor and type of finish, you have a few options. A water based finish is clear, very durable, and will resist turning yellow over time. Oil based finishes are slightly amber in color, and also very durable. Wax finishes soak into the wood and are durable, but tend to show spots from water and contaminates. Wax is also very low luster.
