Varnish must be applied in the direction of the grain, although you don’t have to worry about the accuracy as much as you might think. Because it’s transparent, it’s easy to miss areas during the application. Make sure your lighting is sufficient before beginning.
Apply the varnish and give it a nice, even coat. This is important to give the wood an even look when you’re finished. The first coat is arguably one of the most important.
Sand the surface of the first coat. After allowing it to dry, give it a light sand before doing anything else. Water based varnishes give the effect of lifting the grain of wood, so it’s important to give it a thorough sand job before continuing.
Wipe the surface with a damp cloth to remove any of the dust, and let it dry. Instead of throwing another coat on, allow the first to dry completely. Failing to do so can result in a botched looking finish.
As you notice it drying, continue adding coats afterwards until the desired finish is achieved. This is typically limited to your restrictions and taste, so don’t be nervous to go heavy if it’s something you’ll enjoy -- after all, it is your home!
