Separating wood floors are more common than you think! Actually, your floors are expanding and contracting every single day based on the condition of your home and the climate outside. But sometimes, this can be a little more harsh than other days, especially during the winter. So during this time, what can we do? Below is a hack we thought up that can help you deal with the pesky gaps between your boards.
As common as it might sound, rope is the answer! Grab a putty knife, rope (preferably hemp), and your stain to match the floor. Soak the rope in the stain, and allow it to dry. While it’s doing that, take your putty knife and scrape out any dirt or debris that might be caught in between the planks. When it’s dry, grab your rope and cut it to the appropriate length of the board, but a tad wider than the gap for a tight fit. Press firmly with the putty knife until the rope lays flat with the gap in the wood. Voila, it’s that easy!
Of course, you can always invest in a humidifier to ease the space between the gaps -- even though your wood floors can’t get wet for a long period of time, the moisture in the air does help them expand to their normal size.
