Though we love our furry friends following us around the house and looking as cute as ever, sometimes they’re not so good for our brand new hardwood flooring. From puppies and kittens to the most trained of house animals, they’re not aware at how sensitive flooring is, so they won’t understand what they’re doing. To combat the possibility of floors that sustain damage from their nails and other actions, here are a few things you can do to protect your home.

Runners. Placing runners in the doorways and in larger rooms are great ways to battle their claws, if they’re running. We love seeing the dog greet us after work each day, however his excitement can lead to scratches on the wood. Scratching posts are also great for kittens!
Nail Caps. Though they’re not the most fashionable item, nail caps are made from a softer material and can prevent scratching from appearing on your floor before it happens. Even though it might cause a ‘pitter-patter’ sound, your floors will definitely thank you.
Should your dog make a mess on the floor, it’s important to have it mopped up immediately to avoid staining and warping wood. This might be a good time to invest in some training lessons for your friend and teach them not to do something that could occur while you’re away and unable to clean it.
Training your animal. This is accomplished earlier on in their lifetime, and can be highly effective.Teach your pet to refrain from entering certain rooms with hardwood ,and let them know that it’s bad. You can also close doors when you’re not home, or install baby gates tall enough to keep them out.
Of course, trimming their nails can also be effective, but if you don’t have the time, these will do. Should you be experiencing any blemishes or damage already, make sure you’re prepared for the job to fix it.
