Unfortunately, we’re almost at the time of the year where snow and salt will soon be filling our streets and sidewalks -- and as much as we love snowballs, the white stuff isn’t the best match for your flooring. Between the moisture and ingredients in ice salt, a recipe for disaster is in order if it isn’t taken care of in time. To combat the dangers of salt and snow in your home, there are a few tips you can follow at home, and anywhere else.

Taking Off Your Shoes. This is probably one of the more obvious answer, but you’d be surprised at how many people don’t follow the rules during the winter. Instead of tracking the elements inside, this eliminates the chance of it ever entering the home. Bonus: Shake off all jackets and snow pants before entering as well!
Lay Down A Runner. A big rug at your point of entry can also really improve the chances at nothing harming your floors as well. This way, you and your guests can step on something to absorb and trap snow before it makes it’s way onto your flooring. If you don’t have a big runner, old shower towels also work! Just lay down enough to cover the entire area.
Clean Immediately. The minerals and ingredients in ice-melters can damage the surface of your wood, and penetrate the wax. Combine this factor with the moisture from snow, and you have quite a problem on your hands, should it sit there for any amount of time. Any and all moisture should be wiped up as soon as possible, in order to prevent further damage to your shiny wood flooring.
