Cleaners To Avoid On Hardwood

Your floors are perhaps one of the largest and most important investments you make in your home -- especially hardwood flooring! So over time, they’ll obviously get a bit dirty, which requires some help. Many people turn to what they know best to be cleaners, but the truth is, not all of them are good for floors. In an attempt to save you some hassle and money, here are a few to avoid.

Vinegar

While it’s true that vinegar cleans almost any surface effectively in your home, it’s not recommended for your flooring. Sure, it’s cheap and has no real effect on the environment, but it can really hurt your wood. This is because you’re cleaning the layer of protectant on top of the wood, not the wood itself. Because vinegar is acid-based, this means it can end up ruining the surface ad break it down for a shorter life.

Soapy Water

We know breaking out the old mop bucket is an easy way to grab dirt and debris, but it’s no way to clean your flooring. Instead of soaking the surface with a ton of moisture, make sure you’re wringing it out properly, and mopping quickly. As soon as the moisture hits the ground and picks up dirt, you should be following up by drying it. All of that moisture can end up getting between the planks, warping and separating wood from one another.

For the top cleaners, it’s best to consult an expert in the industry, or visit your local flooring supply store to see what they would recommend for your particular finish.
