So you’ve got your new floors installed and they look great -- but like all great things, it will eventually come to an end, right? I mean, scratches and nicks are just going to ‘happen’ -- wrong! They don’t have to, if you protect your home correctly! But, how can one do this, and what’s the best way to do so? Below, we’ve got a few tips and tricks to preventing your floor from getting those nicks and scratches that can cause imperfections and a less than pleasing floor.
Watching Your Furry Friends
The pitter patter of your animals walking across the floor can sometimes be cute, but not if you ever plan on them playing in that area. Picture your cat and dog play fighting and running across the floor. With sharp claws, they’ll dig into and damage the finish on the wood, which can result in imperfections. A good way to remedy this issue is to simply keep their claws trimmed frequently instead of letting them continue to grow.
Reduce Foot Traffic
Instead of using the area with wood floors as a high traffic area, it might be a good idea to keep rugs in the area near doors, and keeping your shoes by the door. This is because particles that get brought in from outside have a high chance of tracking into your home which can get between your feet and the floor, creating abrasions that are less than appealing.
Cleaning Schedule
While you can’t prevent everything from entering the home, you can effectively clean it before it becomes a problem. Set a reminder for yourself to sweep high-traffic areas daily, and damp mop bi weekly. If you follow a pattern like this, polishing can also be done monthly if you’d like, which can aid in preventing these imperfections from appearing on the floor.
