You’re walking along your floor, but it something is off, and you can hear it. And that’s exactly the problem — you can hear the floor. A creaking floor is less than appealing for many homeowners, and it can be a sign of bad things happening underneath your feet. But how does one understand what it is that’s happening? While it might not be the absolute easiest thing to diagnose, it is possible to figure out. We’ve got some ideas here.
Joists
If your home is old or it’s sustained any type of alterations in the past, your joists might be a bit worn out from this. It’s important to get underneath the area in which you hear it and (if possible), remove the ceiling to inspect the issue. An old worn out joist can cause movement in your flooring panels when stepped on. If this is the case, consider having them reinforced or replaced to silence the noise.
Humidity
Moisture in the air can sometimes help, but it can also hurt as well. In order to figure out if this is the case, take a humidity measurement in your home to test for too much or too little moisture in the air. If it’s not within a range of 35-55%, you might be looking at wood planks that are either too moist or don’t have enough. This can cause the wood to warp or tighten up, also causing noises when you walk along them.
If anything is going wrong in your home on the wood floors from faded wood to noises, there might be an underlying issue to look at. If this is the case, make sure you’re heading somewhere that can provide you with what you need to keep it looking brand new for as long as it needs to.
